But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear. Isaiah 59:2 (ESV)
Situated in the Jordan valley, Sodom which means burning served as one of the border cities of the Canaanites (Bible Dictionary p.393). Considered as the most modern and beautiful city of the period, Sodom produced palm and olive trees which provided the best source of cooking oil. Harvest of the basic food and essential supplies filled the city, as flowers beautified the whole area.
Caravans from Egypt and Mesopotamia brought important and precious goods such as jewelry, clothing, and other merchandise to the Sodom market catering to all its citizens’ needs and wants in life. Buying and selling, and fast food business became an easy way to acquire wealth.
Merchants and inhabitants of Sodom celebrated the nightlife of drinking and dancing the whole year-round. Men married men and women married women, one of the worst sins of Sodom. God wants one man to marry one woman but the people of Sodom did not care about God’s law.
At first Lot’s family lived outside Sodom but later they bought a house and lot inside the city. The people of Sodom, however, admired and believed the superiority of Abraham’s God when He rescued the Sodomites including Lot against the mighty Elamites. Despite this, they continued to violate the law of God.
Love of pleasure resulted in drunkenness and sins that displeased God. Despite the wealth and beauty of the city, the wickedness of its inhabitants compelled God to destroy sinful Sodom and her equally wicked neighboring city Gomorrah (Gen.19:14).
