Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me…. Psalm 23:4 (KJV)
“Why don’t you preach?” Pastor N. Tumangday, School of Theology dean asked me. I just smiled and shook my head before we parted ways. I thought he mistook me for someone else since I was a Social Science major.
After a few days I received a follow up request to serve as Voice of Youth (VOY) speaker in Carmen, Silang, Cavite, situated a few kilometers away from our school. As a graduating student I accepted the witnessing opportunity even if the last meeting coincided with our Graduation Baccalaureate Program. I was also excited to adopt the Social Science way of witnessing which I learned from Professor S. Berto, our department chair.
Barangay Carmen was an adopted community of Philippine Union College (PUC). One of the projects in the area was a water system installed by the alumni association based in the U.S.
At the end of the VOY evangelistic meeting thirteen precious souls accepted Jesus Christ through baptism. That Sabbath, we proceeded down the river behind the PUC food factory.
After Pastor N. Santos, PIC church pastor finished baptizing the new converts, half of them and their relatives rode on a truck that drove them safely up the very steep and slippery slope. Next trailed the Willy’s Jeep known in PUC as the Rat Patrol, our service vehicle for more than two weeks, loaded with the remaining new converts.
The VOY team members down below quietly prepared to follow, when suddenly, desperate shouts broke the afternoon silence as our stunned eyes followed the Rat Patrol speeding backward straight towards the river. Providentially, the beleaguered vehicle landed right smack on the side of Pastor Capule’s car parked on the river bank. Two converts flew out of the jeep. Our adviser’s car was a wreck, and the Rat Patrol never started again. But praise God for the miracle, nobody got injured.
I thanked God for His presence, and the ministry of our VOY Team: Amy Lim, Emma Gohetia, Elmie Villagomez, Dorcas Parulan Charlie Romano, Roger Cordial, Wealthy Estrada and the Barrientos sisters our guest singers, as we prayed.
